What counts as a serious horse watch?
Three things. The horse is sculpted, engraved or enamelled rather than printed. The materials are worth the money — titanium or steel, sapphire crystal, real enamel instead of lacquer. And at the top of the category, the horse is part of the mechanism rather than decoration sitting on top of it. That last point is where prices jump.
So you are really choosing between three tiers: printed and stamped dials, which are gift-shop objects; relief dials, where a cast or carved figure is applied to the dial plate, which is where most genuinely handsome equestrian watches live; and automata, where the figure has its own train of wheels and levers. Automaton horses at any price number in the dozens.
When did the Year of the Horse start in 2026?
The Year of the Horse began on 17 February 2026 and runs until Lunar New Year 2027. It is the seventh of the twelve zodiac signs, and 2026 is specifically a Fire Horse year — the first since 1966, because the element cycle repeats every sixty years rather than every twelve. That rarity is part of why the release calendar has been so busy.
What the established brands released for the Horse year
As reported by the watch press through the first half of 2026: Oris produced a 43 mm Year of the Horse edition on a red dial; Longines added a 42 mm Master Collection piece at around $3,400, limited to 2,026 examples; TAG Heuer did a Carrera Glassbox with a horse standing in for the numeral 7, at 250 pieces; Bulova revived the Super Seville; and San Martin ran a 99-piece version at the accessible end. Take those numbers as reported rather than measured by us. Most are limited, so a good number have already gone from authorised retail — and none of them move.
Can the horse on a dial actually move?
Yes, on a very small number of watches. An automaton is a figure driven by its own gear train, and in Lucky Harvey's chiming references the horse is animated by the same mechanism that swings the hammer at the gong. The brand's parameter sheet lists the function as hourly chiming plus automaton, so the animation and the strike arrive together, once an hour.
Two honest caveats. Lucky Harvey publishes no frame-by-frame breakdown of the horse's motion and no independent reviewer has filmed one; and one of the supplied product descriptions calls the chime on-demand while the brand's own spec sheet says hourly. The 2026 Collector's Edition horse: $2,399.99 in three titanium finishes
The ZLS502 is the reference built around the animal. A sculpted horse fills most of the dial mid-stride, with a hand-painted enamel saddle cloth and enamelled tack in green, blue and orange depending on the variant. Lucky Harvey says the form and the yellow-green-white palette come from Tang tri-colour glazed ceramic horses, a more specific reference than most zodiac watches bother with. Cases are grade-5 titanium alloy, the rose-gold variant's page states 39 mm, and all three carry sapphire plus a pusher at 4 o'clock that silences the strike, with a bell indicator on the dial showing which state it is in.

Blue titanium, ZLS502-1
The coolest of the three and the easiest to wear casually: a brushed silver-white horse over a teal textured ground, blue enamel details, blue alligator-pattern leather. If you want the watch to read as a watch first and a zodiac piece second, the blue ZLS502-1 at $2,399.99 is the one.
Rose gold and brown, ZLS502-2
Warmer, dressier, and the variant whose page gives the fullest specification: 39 mm rose-gold-tone grade-5 titanium, calibre LH003 at 28,800 vph with a stated 40 to 42 hours of reserve, brown leather. Tone-on-tone rose gold against a brown ground makes this the subtlest execution in the family.

Gold and black, ZLS502-3
The loudest of the set and the one that photographs best: a gold horse with green and orange enamel over a black textured dial, gold-tone titanium case, black strap. The gold-and-black ZLS502-3 is a statement piece at the same $2,399.99, and makes no apology for it.

A rider, an eagle and a camp on the steppe: the Genghis Khan at $2,199.99
The other horse in the catalogue is really a scene. The ZLS504 puts a sculpted rider rearing on horseback at the left of the dial, an eagle in flight at the right, and between them a hand-engraved grassland: a yurt camp, standing guards, snow-capped mountains behind. The reference is Mongol and steppe equestrian culture rather than Chinese imagery, and what makes it worth owning is the horsemanship and the falconry, not anything to do with conquest. It is a landscape with a rider in it.

The specification is unusual for the money: 39 mm by about 10 mm in grade-5 titanium alloy, sapphire, 5 ATM, calibre LH003 with a stated 40-hour reserve, leather strap, numbered caseback, and an edition of 100 pieces. The guilloché ground graduates from light at the centre to dark at the rim, which the brand likens to a curtain opening on the scene.
Charcoal silver or rose gold?
They read differently. The silver-cased ZLS504-1 pairs a charcoal-grey guilloché ring and black strap with a bright gold rider and eagle, so the figures pop. Titanium or steel for a gift?
Titanium, if the watch chimes. Grade 5 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is roughly 40% lighter than stainless steel and hypoallergenic, which matters for anyone who has reacted to a cheap caseback. Christopher Ward chose grade-5 titanium for its Bel Canto specifically because it improves the resonance and tone of the chime, so the choice is acoustic as well as ergonomic. Steel's counter-argument is that it feels denser on the wrist and refinishes more cheaply after a scratch — real, but secondary here.
Buying one as a present: what to check first
Size is the good news. Most automatons are 43 mm and thick, because a sculpted figure needs dial space and the module needs depth. Both watches here are 39 mm, the Genghis Khan about 10 mm deep, so they suit a 6.5 to 7.5 inch wrist and slide under a cuff. Water resistance is dress-watch level at 5 ATM: rain and hand-washing, not swimming. The strap is standard leather on a pin buckle, so a colour or length swap is a five-minute job. And the strike draws on that 40-hour reserve, so a watch left in its box between wears will stop — if the recipient is not already an automatic person, say so on the card or budget for a winder.
Now the honest part. Lucky Harvey was founded in 2021 in Guangzhou. It has entered the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève three years running — entered, not been nominated and not won — and there is essentially no independent long-term review coverage of the brand anywhere. The striking and automaton modules are its own, but the origin of the base going train is undisclosed. That is worth knowing rather than worth panicking over: the Swiss benchmark for accessible chiming, the Bel Canto, is also a sourced Sellita base with a proprietary striking module on top.
