A jump hour watch shows the hour as a number in a window instead of with a hand. A printed disc sits behind an aperture — usually at 12 o'clock — and snaps instantly to the next numeral the moment the hour turns, so a fully mechanical watch ends up reading like a digital clock. Minutes are still shown conventionally by a hand on a track, and most jump hours add a small seconds dial. The complication is older than you'd guess (patented in 1883) and today spans roughly $139 to well past $100,000 for the same basic trick.
It's also one of the few genuinely unusual complications you can still buy on a small budget — and there's a good reason for that, which we'll get to.
What is a jump hour watch?
A jump hour watch (also called a jumping hour) replaces the hour hand with a rotating disc read through a small window. Every 60 minutes the disc advances one step in a single instantaneous jump. Nothing crawls: at 12:59:59 the numeral flicks over like an old railway station board.
True jump hour vs. dragging disc vs. wandering hours
Three displays get filed under "jump hour," and only one of them is one:
- True jumping hour — the disc is held, then released, and snaps to the next numeral at the top of the hour.
- Dragging or creeping disc — a cheaper solution geared to turn continuously, so for several minutes either side of the hour you see two half-numerals at once.
- Wandering hours — satellite discs carrying the numeral in an arc across a minute scale (think Audemars Piguet Star Wheel). A different complication entirely.
The tell: watch the aperture at :59. A true jump hour shows one clean numeral right up to the changeover, then a different clean numeral. A dragging disc has already started sliding.
Reading the time
Hour from the window, minutes from the hand. There's a short adjustment period — for a day or two your eye still hunts for an hour hand — and then it becomes faster to read than a conventional dial, because the hour is printed for you rather than estimated from a hand's angle.
How the jumping hour complication works
Here's the engineering problem: an hour disc is heavy. Next to a slender hand its rotational inertia is enormous, and a normal going train cannot shove it a full step in an instant without robbing the balance wheel of amplitude and wrecking timekeeping.
So the mechanism cheats, elegantly. Over each hour the movement slowly loads a small tension spring, storing energy a fraction at a time. At the top of the hour a lever trips and releases all of it at once: the disc snaps forward, a jumper spring drops into a notch to hold it dead centre in the aperture, and the loading cycle restarts. The watch spends 59 minutes winding a tiny catapult and one instant firing it.
That's also why a jump hour has a visible failure mode. A misaligned numeral or a lazy half-jump is obvious to the owner in a way a hairspring running 15 seconds fast never is — which is why the complication has a reputation for being temperamental that it doesn't quite deserve.
From 1883 to the Zeitwerk: a short history
Josef Pallweber patented a jumping-numeral display in 1883, and from 1885 IWC built around 20,000 Pallweber pocket watches — mechanical watches with no hands at all, sold at the height of Victorian enthusiasm for anything that looked like the future.
The idea found its natural home in Art Deco. The Cartier Tank à Guichets of 1928 — guichets meaning ticket windows — hid the dial almost entirely behind solid metal, leaving two small apertures, and remains the design reference for the category. The 1970s brought a stranger revival as mechanical watchmaking scrambled to look as modern as the arriving quartz LEDs: the Amida Digitrend (1976) is the icon, a wedge-shaped case read by glancing at the side of your wrist like a car's instrument binnacle.
Then haute horlogerie reclaimed it. Chronoswiss revived the Digiteur in 2005. A. Lange & Söhne's Zeitwerk (2009) answered the torque problem with a constant-force escapement and jumping minutes as well as hours; the platinum version lists at $126,800. IWC's Tribute to Pallweber (2018) arrived at around €24,000 — in steel.
Why jump hour watches cost so much (and why a handful don't)
Three reasons it's normally expensive: the torque problem needs a purpose-built module or calibre, not an off-the-shelf date wheel; tolerances are tight because the jumper has to land the numeral centred; and that visible failure mode puts a brand's reputation on the line every hour, all day.
Which brings us to the genuinely interesting part of this market. Practically every affordable jump hour on earth runs the same movement — Tianjin Seagull's jump-hour member of the ST17 family, the ST1721. Not similar movements — the same one. It's the calibre in Specht & Söhne's jump hours and in the Sugess S451 at about $139, a fair rival worth naming: same complication, same movement, plainer presentation. Step outside that monoculture and the ladder gets steep fast. The Xeric Retroscope, around $299, is a real jump hour but quartz rather than mechanical — a legitimate pick if you'd rather have ±15 seconds a month than a spring-driven snap. Above it, essentially nothing until MeisterSinger in the mid four figures, then the IWC and Lange tier. The same complication spans roughly a 900-fold price range, and one Chinese calibre holds up the entire bottom rung.

Same complication in a 39 mm case on leather — the one to buy if the jump hour is going under a cuff: more aperture presence, conventional modern proportions, and leather does the Art Deco lineage more justice than rubber. Choosing between the two is purely size and strap; the mechanism is identical.
Living with a jump hour watch
Set the time clockwise only. This is the one ownership rule that matters, and almost nobody mentions it. The jumper is built to load and release in one direction; forcing the hands backwards — especially in the last minutes before the changeover, when the tension spring is fully wound — can damage it. Overshot? Keep going forward all the way round. Thirty seconds of thumb work instead of a repair.
Expect a watch you wear rather than rotate, too: the ST17 family runs a reserve in the region of 38 hours, so left in a drawer over a weekend it stops — and restarting means walking the hands forward again.
On accuracy, be realistic. This is a budget automatic, not a chronometer: plan on roughly 20–30 seconds a day, and note that ST17-family movements don't hack, so you can't stop the seconds hand to sync exactly. How do you set a jump hour watch?
Clockwise only, and ideally not in the five minutes either side of the hour change. Never turn the hands anticlockwise — the jumper and its tension spring are designed to load in one direction, and forcing them backwards risks damage. If you overshoot, continue forward for a full revolution.
