Is the "29.5-day" moonphase claim true?
Treat it as a brand-stated spec, not a measured one. The only independent hands-on measurement of an Agelocer moon display — Deployant's review of the brand's Silver Moon — found the disc advancing on a 31-day cycle rather than the 29.53-day synodic month, and stated categorically that it had to disqualify the watch as a horological moonphase. Wristwatchreview reached the same conclusion from the other direction, describing the display as driven off a modified date wheel. That is the entire independent record — two write-ups, one measurement, on a sibling model rather than on each of the nine Astronomers. Meanwhile the $499 variant's own page pushes the accuracy story further still, quoting a long-term drift figure of the kind normally attached to five-figure Swiss perpetual moonphases. We are not restating it, because no published test supports it and the brand has released no timing data.
What does that mean on your wrist? If the disc steps once every 31 days, it falls roughly a day and a half behind the real moon each cycle, and can sit a couple of weeks out by the end of a year. You nudge it back with the crown when it bothers you, exactly as you correct the date on any watch without a perpetual calendar. How does the Astronomer wear at 40 mm?
Comfortably, and more discreetly than the dial suggests. It is 40 mm across, 10.6 mm thick on leather or 11 mm on the bracelet, with a 20 mm strap and a stated 150–210 mm wearing length. That covers roughly 6 to 8-inch wrists. At 50 m it handles rain and hand-washing, not swimming.
On finishing, the one independent voice is worth quoting precisely rather than generalising: reviewing the Silver Moon, Deployant rated the movement decoration — polished anglage, Côtes de Genève, blued screws — as arguably better than others in the price category, and called the 40 × 11 mm case comfortable. That is fair evidence that Agelocer can finish a movement at this price, not a guarantee about the specific variant in your basket.
Legibility is dial-dependent. Painted silver dials are easiest to read; the dark galaxy, aventurine and meteorite faces, all with polished hands, ask you to catch the light at the right angle — lovely in daylight, a squint in a dim restaurant. Where the Astronomer is honestly weak
Four things, and none of them is the moon disc we have already dealt with.
The strap and bracelet. This is the most consistent independent criticism of Agelocer across the whole catalogue — three separate mentions, including a chipped bracelet and a clasp that did not inspire confidence, alongside the blunter version: swap the strap and these watches punch far above their price. Budget $30–60 for a good 20 mm strap and treat it as part of the purchase.
The marketing register. Timepieceking's review of the brand takes issue with Swiss-evoking presentation against Chinese manufacture, and enthusiasts routinely confuse Agelocer with Horage — a genuinely Swiss independent at roughly ten times the money. Knowing what you are buying is part of enjoying it — here is why the model names sound Swiss.
The evidence base. There is no independent timing test of an Astronomer, no long-term durability reporting, and essentially no organic Reddit discussion of the brand. Dialicious carries about five Agelocer owner reviews averaging roughly 4.1 out of 5, with no failures reported over one to three years, and only a couple cover the Astronomer line. Five reviews is an anecdote, not a reliability record.
Taste. Plenty of enthusiasts find the oversized moon and starry dial too much, and say so — a matter of taste rather than quality, but sit with the photographs for a day first.
What else does $269 to $999 buy you in a moonphase?
Here is the odd thing about this segment: none of the major affordable-moonphase round-ups include Agelocer at all. They cycle through the same names — Citizen, Seiko, Mido, Tissot, Certina, Glycine, the MoonSwatch — and almost all of those are three-hand watches with a small moon aperture tucked at six o'clock.
