Scroll a page of affordable automatics and the same five characters keep appearing — in the title, in the first bullet point, sometimes stamped across the photograph itself: NH35. No other component in this price class gets billed like a headline act. Sellers know that most buyers cannot evaluate a case, a bracelet or a gasket from a listing, but they can recognise those five characters and feel reassured.
They are largely right to. The Seiko NH35 movement is a sound piece of engineering and its presence rules out a whole category of bad watch. What it cannot do is rank the good ones, and that gap is where the marketing lives. Here is the calibre in full: the published specification, the accuracy to actually expect, how it differs from its siblings and its main rival, and what a named movement still tells you nothing about.

What is the Seiko NH35 movement?
The NH35A is an automatic calibre built by TMI (Time Module Inc.), the industrial movement arm of Seiko Instruments, and it is the unbranded equivalent of Seiko’s own 4R35. The published specification gives 21,600 vph, roughly 41 hours of reserve, 24 jewels, hacking seconds, manual winding and Diashock shock protection. Hundreds of brands fit it.
That last sentence is the whole story of its reputation. TMI sells movements to anyone, in quantity, at a price that lets a finished watch retail for well under $200. The result is an industrial standard: one architecture, understood by every watchmaker, with parts in every drawer.
Why every listing shouts about it
Because it is the one specification a non-specialist recognises on sight. That makes naming it a real service — an unnamed “automatic movement” on a listing is a genuine warning sign — and a marketing crutch, because it lets a seller call the one component identical across a hundred rival watches a differentiator. Both are true at once, and the rest of this page holds both.

Two rows matter more than the rest. Hacking and hand-winding read like small print until you own the watch: hacking lets you set the seconds against a reference, and hand-winding means a piece left in a drawer for a week comes back in thirty seconds instead of being shaken awake. How accurate is an NH35, really?
An NH35 will typically keep time within roughly ten to fifteen seconds a day, based on what owners consistently report. The −20/+40 seconds per day figure quoted everywhere is a factory tolerance ceiling — the widest deviation TMI will pass — not a performance target. Most examples land comfortably inside it.
Those two numbers get conflated constantly, and it cuts both ways: sellers quote the real-world figure as if it were guaranteed, sceptics quote the tolerance as if every NH35 loses twenty seconds a day. An example adjusted by a watchmaker can reach ±10 seconds a day or better. Worth saying plainly, though: we do not sell any watch as regulated. Nothing in our catalogue is individually adjusted before shipping, so treat the reported range as an expectation, not a promise.
How to measure yours in five days
Set the watch against your phone’s clock at a fixed time — hacking makes this exact — wear it normally, and check it at the same hour for five consecutive days. Divide the total drift by five. One day tells you nothing, because a single night resting crown-up or dial-down can swing the figure by several seconds on its own.
What actually moves the number
Position, mostly: a movement runs at a different rate lying flat than standing on its crown, which is why two people get different results from identical watches. Then wear pattern, because a mainspring near the end of its reserve loses amplitude and drifts. Then magnetism — the usual culprit when a watch suddenly gains a minute a day after a week beside a laptop. None of these is a fault; all of them are why a five-day average beats a one-day reading.
NH35 vs NH36 vs NH38 vs NH34
The NH family shares one movement architecture and differs in what it drives on the dial side. A higher number is not a better movement — it is a different set of hands and apertures, which means a different dial.

So a watch advertised as “upgraded to NH36” has not been upgraded; it has a day window, which you either want or find cluttered. The interesting one is the NH38 — dropping the date is what allows a symmetrical dial or a cut-away over the balance, at no cost in reliability.
NH35 vs Miyota 8215 — the comparison you are actually making
At this price the real choice is rarely NH35 against a Swiss calibre. It is NH35 against the Miyota 8215, Citizen’s equivalent workhorse, and we sell both in volume across different brands.

Read that honestly and the accuracy difference is noise: identical beat rates, identical published tolerances, an hour of reserve between them. The NH35’s real edge is that hacking is guaranteed rather than a coin-flip on production date, and that its seconds hand does not shimmy. The 8215’s edge is supply — in production since 1975, arguably the most repairable automatic in the class. Neither buys you a better watch on its own. What an NH35 does not tell you
This is the section a retailer ought to write and almost nobody does, because it argues against the easiest sentence in the listing. The movement is the cheapest variable in the decision. Two watches can share an identical NH35 and be separated by a hundred dollars of everything else.
Case and bracelet finishing
Brushing that stops cleanly at an edge, chamfers that stay straight, end links that meet the case without a gap — this is where the labour cost sits, and it varies enormously. So does clasp hardware: a stamped folding clasp and a milled one with a dive extension cost very different amounts to make, and feel it.

Crystal, lume and gaskets
Sapphire, mineral or hardened mineral is a real price difference and a real ownership difference — our comparison of sapphire and mineral crystal covers which matters when. Lume varies in grade, thickness and evenness, and a listing that says only “luminous hands” is not telling you which. And gasket quality decides whether a stated water-resistance figure survives its first year — a different question from the number printed on the dial, covered in what a water-resistance rating really permits.

Lume application is one of the widest quality gaps in the category, and no calibre name predicts it.
Quality control
Bezel alignment, chapter-ring rotation, hands that sit true at twelve: assembly-line variables, not movement variables, and the most common reason a watch at this price gets returned. A named calibre rules out the worst listings. It says nothing about whether the particular example in your box was put together carefully. Servicing, and what living with one really costs
Here the NH35 does something no expensive movement can: it makes repair economics simple. Complete replacement movements and individual parts are widely available and every watchmaker has worked on this architecture, which means when something eventually goes wrong you have two quotes rather than one.
A full overhaul of a mid-range mechanical watch is commonly quoted around $150 to $350, on an interval the industry usually puts at three to seven years. At the price these watches sell for, that can approach what the whole watch cost. So ask your watchmaker to price a movement swap alongside a service — at this tier replacement is frequently the rational answer, and there is no shame in it. And the brands that deliberately do not use it
Two of the brands we sell most of run something else entirely. Agelocer uses its own A-series and 9000-series calibres, described by the brand as in-house, because its catalogue leans on tourbillons, moonphases and long power reserves the NH35 does not offer. Specht & Söhne spreads across Miyota and Citizen automatics, Seagull ST17 automatics and several Seiko and Hattori quartz calibres, chosen model by model. Neither is a downgrade. Questions people ask about the NH35
Is the NH35 a good movement?
Yes, for what it costs. It hacks, it hand-winds, it is shock-protected, parts are everywhere and any watchmaker can work on it. The caveat matters though: it appears in hundreds of watches of wildly different quality, so it rules out the worst listings without telling you which of the good ones to buy.
How accurate is an NH35 out of the box?

Is the NH35 the same as a Seiko 4R35?
They share the same architecture: the NH35 is the unbranded version TMI sells to other brands, the 4R35 is the badged version inside Seiko’s own watches. Specifications match. Do not assume the finishing and final adjustment are identical, because that is decided by whoever assembles the watch.
