Does titanium scratch more than steel?
Bare grade-5 titanium marks more readily than hardened stainless steel, but the marks are less visible — they scatter light as dull grey rather than flashing back as bright lines. The difference that matters is repair. Steel polishes back. Titanium’s surface is much harder to restore without changing how the case reads.
The search results contradict each other on this because both halves are true and everyone quotes one. A titanium case picks up more marks against a desk edge over a year, and looks better at the end of that year, because a brushed titanium surface absorbs scuffs into its own texture instead of interrupting a mirror. Take both to a watchmaker and the steel comes back factory-fresh; the titanium comes back looking like a different watch.
Two caveats worth reading a listing for: hardened and surface-treated titanium behaves nothing like a bare case, and grade 5 is not the only titanium in watchmaking, so the word on its own tells you very little.
What “grade 5” actually means
Grade 5 is Ti-6Al-4V: roughly 90% titanium with about 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. It is an alloy, not pure titanium, and it is stronger and harder than the commercially pure grades, which is exactly why watchmaking gravitated to it for cases and bracelets.
What it does not tell you is everything else. “Grade 5” is a material specification, not a quality certificate: it says nothing about how well the case is finished, how the bracelet links are machined, whether the endlinks sit flush, or how good the gaskets are. Two watches can both be honestly labelled grade 5 titanium and be a class apart in the hand.

Now read it honestly, because the conclusion is not the one a titanium seller wants you to draw. A leather strap saves more weight than titanium does. The Astronomer Moonphase is the same 40mm watch with the same movement in both rows: 146 g on its steel bracelet, 76.2 g on leather. That is 70 grams from a strap swap. A grade-5 titanium case of that size saves you nothing like it — the titanium ZLS413 comes in at 98 g on a full metal bracelet, which is the fairer comparison and still lands 48 g under the steel version.

The reason nobody mentions: titanium and sound
Weight is the argument everyone makes. There is a second one, and it only shows up in a corner of watchmaking most comparison pages never visit: a chiming watch uses its case as a resonator. The gong is anchored to the case, the case radiates the note, and the metal it is cut from is part of the instrument rather than just the box around it.
That reasoning is not ours and it is not a marketing line from an affordable brand. Christopher Ward chose grade-5 titanium for the Bel Canto explicitly on the grounds that it improves the resonance and tone of the chime — a Swiss chiming watch, stating the acoustic case for the material out loud. It is worth reading alongside our comparison of the two chiming approaches.

Be clear about what that is and is not. This is design intent, a documented reason for choosing a material, and we are describing it as such. Nobody has published a controlled tonal comparison of the same chiming watch in two metals, we have not measured one, and any page quoting you a decibel figure or a “warmer tone” verdict is telling you how it felt rather than what it measured. One thing the price list gives away: within this range, titanium is not a surcharge. The $2,199.99 titanium ZLS504 undercuts the $2,399.99 steel-cased enamel snake. What sets the price here is the complication, not the metal.

And the honest counterpart: there is no titanium Agelocer and no titanium Specht & Söhne. Between $99 and $500 the market is 316L steel almost without exception, and that is a manufacturing-cost reality rather than a corner being cut — steel is what lets a mechanical watch land at under $500 with sapphire and a display back. Is titanium worth the premium?
Three answers, and only one is yes. Yes if you wear a 42mm-plus watch daily or your skin reacts to steel — comfort is titanium’s permanent win. No if you are buying it for toughness: the surface is softer and harder to repair. No if lightness alone is the goal, because a leather strap gets you there for $30–60.
Living with each
Cleaning is the same for both: a damp microfibre cloth, dried properly, with attention to the gaps around the lugs where sweat collects. The divergence is at the repair bench. Do not hand a titanium case to a jeweller who is going to reach for a polishing wheel — that wheel is set up for steel, it will round your edges and leave a shine the rest of the case cannot match. Ask specifically whether they refinish titanium before you leave it.
Two things the case material does not decide. Water resistance is a gasket, crown and caseback question, not a metal one: across the Lucky Harvey range the chiming references print 5 ATM (50m) in both steel and titanium, while the casino and automaton models are 3 ATM (30m), so the split follows the complication rather than the case. Either way, 50m means splashes rather than swimming. And strap choice is wide open: a titanium case takes exactly the same spring bars as a steel one at the same lug width, so the lightest version of any watch is usually the one on fabric or leather.
