The chronograph is the complication people buy and then quietly stop using — not because it is hard, but because the first press does something they were not expecting. Learning how to use a chronograph watch takes about a minute. The part almost nobody explains is working out which kind of chronograph is on your wrist, because under $200 they are not all built the same way.
How do you use a chronograph watch?
To use a chronograph watch, press the upper pusher to start the timer and press it again to stop. The lower pusher returns the hands to zero. Read elapsed time from the chronograph hand plus its minute and hour counters. The watch keeps telling the time the whole while — timing and timekeeping run independently of each other.
Before you press anything: on some chronographs the big central hand is the stopwatch, and it sits perfectly still until you start it. On others that same hand is the running seconds, and the stopwatch lives in a small dial at six o'clock. Work out which one you own before you decide something is broken.

How to use a chronograph watch: reading your dial in 30 seconds
The pushers
Almost universally, the pusher above the crown — two o'clock — is start and stop, and the one below at four o'clock is reset. They are sequential, not independent: on the vast majority of chronographs you must stop the timer before reset does anything. If the bottom button feels dead while the hand is moving, that is the design working.
What the sub-dials mean
A sub-dial is one of three things. A chronograph minutes counter (a 30- or 60-unit scale) totals the minutes your timer has run. A chronograph hours counter does the same over longer sessions. A running seconds dial is not part of the stopwatch at all — it is the ordinary seconds hand, exiled from the centre.
Telling them apart needs no manual: the running seconds hand is the one that never stops. Look at the dial without touching anything. Whatever moves is telling the time; whatever is parked at zero belongs to the chronograph.

Worked example on the SP0009: a 60-unit counter left of centre, a 24-hour indicator to the right, and no small running-seconds dial anywhere. Nothing on this dial moves until the chronograph is started.
The central hand's job
On a mechanical chronograph, and on the meca-quartz hybrids sold at this price, the long central hand is the stopwatch seconds — full length, readable across a room, which is the whole practical argument for the layout. On a standard quartz chronograph the roles swap and the centre counts ordinary seconds. The date, if you have one, is a passenger: the pushers never touch it.
The distinction that decides everything: VK versus VD53
Two Japanese quartz families dominate this price band and they behave completely differently. The VK63 and VK64 are meca-quartz: quartz timekeeping, plus a mechanical chronograph module that puts the stopwatch seconds on the central hand and snaps them back to twelve against a heart-shaped cam. The VD53 is a standard quartz chronograph: chronograph seconds in the sub-dial at six, central hand running seconds, reset stepping back electronically. From the driver's seat: press reset on a VK and the big hand is at zero, no travel, no wind-down, with a mechanical clack you will press again for fun. Press reset on a VD53 and a small hand walks back round its sub-dial under motor control. If you time things often the VK is easier to read; if you mostly want a handsome dial, the gap matters less than the internet suggests.

The other layout, on the SP0006: a single 60-unit counter at six for the stopwatch, with the central hand handling ordinary running seconds. Same two pushers, entirely different reading job.
A third thing fools people, and it is not a chronograph at all. Sweeping quartz calibres such as the VH31 beat four times a second, so the seconds hand glides like an automatic — but there are no pushers and nothing to time. A smooth seconds hand tells you about the beat rate, never about the complication. How do you use a tachymeter?
To use a tachymeter, start the chronograph as you pass a known point, stop it exactly one measured mile or kilometre later, and read the number the chronograph hand points to on the outer scale. That figure is your average speed. The scale is pre-calculated arithmetic printed on a bezel — nothing inside the watch measures anything.
The maths behind the printing is 3,600 divided by the elapsed seconds: cover a mile in 45 seconds and the scale reads 80, because 3,600 ÷ 45 = 80 mph. That also explains the limit nobody mentions — the scale only works between roughly 7 and 60 seconds. Take longer than a minute and the hand has passed twelve and the reading is meaningless, which makes a tachymeter useless for anything you would time on foot.
Two cousins share that outer track: a pulsometer, graduated so that timing 15 or 30 heartbeats reads out beats per minute, and a telemeter, which turns the delay between seeing something and hearing it into distance.
An honest note on our own catalogue: no product description of ours states a tachymeter scale, and we checked the dial photography of all three chronographs below — those outer tracks are minute and seconds railroads, not speed scales. Things that will make you think it is broken
The chronograph hand does not return to exactly twelve
Zero-reset drift, and it happens on mechanical, meca-quartz and standard quartz alike — a knock, a flat cell or a hand seated a hair off centre. It has no effect on elapsed-time accuracy, since timing runs from wherever the hand is parked. Most movements allow the hands to be realigned, but the procedure differs by calibre, so follow the one for yours.
The sub-dial hand jumps in big steps
On many quartz chronographs the counters advance in visible increments rather than gliding — a minutes hand may sit still for a full minute and then jump. That is how the module is geared, not a dying movement.
The reset pusher will not press
Stop the timer first. Without a flyback function — rare well above this price bracket — reset is mechanically locked out while the chronograph runs. Forcing it is how pushers get damaged.
A mechanical chronograph runs down faster with the timer going
Normal: the module draws power from the same mainspring as the timekeeping train, so a running chronograph shortens the reserve and adds wear. None of the three watches below is mechanical, so it does not apply to them.
Should you leave the chronograph running?
No on a mechanical chronograph: it costs power reserve and adds wear for no benefit. On a quartz or meca-quartz chronograph it does no mechanical harm, but the extra motor work drains the cell faster, so you buy shorter battery life in exchange for nothing. Reset it when you are done.

The meca-quartz one, and the cheapest of the three: central sweeping chronograph hand, mechanical snap-back reset, a 60-unit counter and a 24-hour indicator in a 39 mm square case. The spec field lists Hardlex rather than sapphire — the honest trade at this price. One disclosure we would rather make ourselves: our own listing carries two different water-resistance figures for this model, so we will not quote you one; treat it as a dry-wrist watch. Verdict: if you want to use a chronograph, buy the SP0009.
SP0006 VD53 Chronograph, $139.99 — buy it for the dial, not the reset

The SP0006, 40 mm, with the textured dial that is the real reason to buy it.
A standard quartz chronograph, and we will keep saying so, because the label matters when a hundred listings blur it. The stopwatch lives in the sub-dial at six and the reset is electronic; the compensation is a cushion case and a layered dial texture that punches well above $139.99. Hardlex per the spec field, 50 m water resistance. Verdict: the SP0006 if the dial is what you fall for and the stopwatch is a bonus.
SP-5980 Oversized Octagonal Chronograph, $139.99 — three registers, no homage target

The SP-5980: three registers, an octagonal bezel and an integrated bracelet, at $139.99.
The textbook three-register layout — minutes counter, 24-hour indicator, running seconds — in a 40 mm octagonal case on an integrated bracelet, sapphire on the spec field, 50 m water resistance. Two honest flags. Its model name invites comparison with two different luxury references that are not even the same watch as each other, so we call it what it is: an oversized octagonal chronograph with no single homage target. And the calibre the listing names is one we could not corroborate anywhere else, so press the pusher, see which hand moves, and judge it on that. Verdict: the SP-5980 if you want the full three-counter dial and a bracelet in the box.
And one that is not a chronograph at all: the SP7188 Ultrathin, $154.99, listed with a VH31 — sweeping quartz seconds, sapphire, a 35.2 mm case, no pushers, no stopwatch. It is here as a warning label, because a gliding seconds hand sells a lot of watches to people who thought they were buying a chronograph.
The counterweights apply to all three. Specht dials and case geometry over-deliver for the money; the bracelet and clasp hardware is where the budget went, and a $30–60 strap swap is the highest-value upgrade available to any of them. What do the three sub-dials on a chronograph mean?
On a classic three-register layout, one counts chronograph minutes, one counts chronograph hours, and one is the running seconds that keep moving whether or not the stopwatch is going. Two-register dials usually drop the hours counter and often replace running seconds with a 24-hour indicator, which is why some chronographs have no visibly moving hand at rest.
What is a tachymeter for, and does anyone use one?
It converts elapsed time over a known distance into average speed, and honestly, almost nobody uses one. It survives because racing chronographs made it iconic.
