Nobody buys their first mechanical watch and asks about complications. You buy the watch, you wear it, and then three months later you are squinting at a spec sheet at midnight trying to work out whether a "sonnerie au passage" is something you want in your life. This page is the map: watch complications explained one entry at a time, in plain language, with what each one actually costs.
Most complication glossaries are written by people with nothing to sell you, which sounds noble until you notice that the only examples they name are five-figure Swiss references. We sell watches, so every complication below that we stock ends in a working example and its price, between $129.99 and $2,399.99. The ones we do not stock say so and go unlinked.
What is a watch complication?
A watch complication is any function a watch performs beyond telling the hour, minute and second. A date window is a complication. So is a minute repeater. The word describes the addition, not the difficulty — which is exactly why "complicated" and "expensive" are not the same thing.
How to use this page: each entry tells you what the complication does, whether it earns its place on a wrist, and what the cheapest genuine example costs here. Where we have written a full guide, the entry ends in a link to it. This page is deliberately the shallow end.
Watch complications explained: the four types, in one table
Watchmakers have never agreed on a taxonomy, so here is a practical one. These four types of watch complications are sorted by what they do for the person wearing the watch, not by how hard they are to build.

Three of those entries we cannot serve at all: there is no perpetual calendar, no minute repeater and no alarm watch anywhere in our catalogue, and the sections below say so rather than dressing up a near-miss. One simple entry gets no section of its own — a 24-hour indication is an extra hand or subdial reading the day against a 24-hour scale, and the cheapest here is the $269 Agelocer Racing Hollow.
Date and calendar complications
The date window
The most common complication in watchmaking and, honestly, the one most likely to irritate you. A disc under the dial advances once every 24 hours through an aperture. The catch is the change-over: for several hours around midnight the gear train is already engaged, so quick-setting the date in that window can strip teeth. The day-date
A day-date adds the weekday alongside the date, usually in a second aperture or a widened window — we do not list one anywhere in the Agelocer, Lucky Harvey or Specht & Söhne ranges, so this entry exists for completeness rather than for sale.
The big date
A big date is not just a larger window. It is a two-disc mechanism: one disc carries the units, another the tens, and the two are read side by side through a wide aperture, which is why the numerals can be twice the size without a twice-as-large dial. Annual and perpetual calendars
An annual calendar knows the length of every month except February, and a perpetual knows all of them including leap years — we sell neither, and no watch in our catalogue comes close.
Timing complications
The chronograph
A stopwatch built into a watch: one pusher starts and stops an independent timing hand, another zeroes it, and the watch keeps telling the time throughout. It is the most useful complication most people never use. It is also the one where the specification sheet hides the most, because "chronograph" covers three mechanically different things at this price. The tachymeter
A fixed scale, usually on the bezel or the dial flange, that converts elapsed seconds into an average speed over a known distance. It works between roughly seven and sixty seconds and almost nobody has used one since car dashboards got speedometers. We will not tell you a specific watch carries one without looking at that dial first — the worked example lives in our chronograph how-to.
Meca-quartz (a chronograph type, not a complication)
Meca-quartz pairs quartz timekeeping with a mechanical chronograph module, which is what gives you a sweeping central chrono hand and a heart-cam snap-back to zero instead of an electronic step-back. It is a construction choice rather than a complication in its own right, and it is the single biggest reason two $130 chronographs feel completely different — explained properly in our meca-quartz guide.
The dive bezel
A unidirectional bezel times an interval by aligning its zero marker with the minute hand, and it turns one way only, so a knock can shorten your remaining time but never lengthen it. Strictly it is not a complication — nothing was added to the movement — and we would rather say so than pad the list; the styles are in our bezel guide.
Travel complications
GMT
A fourth hand circling the dial once every 24 hours, read against a 24-hour scale, so you can see a second time zone at a glance. The good versions let you jump the local hour hand independently while the GMT hand keeps home time running — the ones that do not are still useful, just fiddlier to reset. World time
A world timer puts a ring of city names around the dial against a 24-hour track, so a whole map of zones is readable at once rather than one extra zone. On the Agelocer World Time at $399 the dial carries a world map with the city ring around it; check the listing for exactly how the display is set, because implementations differ far more than the marketing suggests. Which of the two do you actually want?
If you have one other time zone in your life — family abroad, a work office, a market you trade — a GMT is easier to read and easier to live with. If you genuinely juggle several, the world timer earns its keep. If you travel twice a year, neither will change your life, and that is fine.
Astronomical complications
Moonphase
A disc printed with two moons rotates behind an aperture, revealing more or less of one as the lunar month advances. It is the least useful complication in wide production and one of the most charming, which is the whole point. How accurate is a moonphase, really?
Agelocer rates the Astronomer's display at 29.5 days, which is a manufacturer specification rather than a measured result. Independent hands-on testing by Deployant found the disc advancing on a 31-day cycle instead, behaving more like a modified date wheel. So treat the moonphase as decorative first and a lunar instrument second, whoever built it.
Meteorite and aventurine dials are materials, not complications
Both get filed under "complications" in shop listings constantly, and both are simply dial materials: a slice of iron meteorite showing a Widmanstätten pattern, or aventurine glass with copper inclusions that read as a star field. Nothing extra happens in the movement. Display complications
Open heart
A single aperture cut in an otherwise solid dial, positioned over the balance wheel so you can watch it swing. Strictly that is what "open heart" means, and a large proportion of watches sold under the term are actually open-worked dials with several cut-outs, which is a different look and a different price. We use the honest word in our open heart guide, and we flag which of ours are which.
Skeleton and open-worked dials
A true skeleton has the movement's own bridges and plates cut away so light passes through the whole watch; an open-worked dial removes dial material to reveal the movement underneath. Jump hour
The hour does not sweep; it sits in an aperture and snaps to the next numeral on the hour, driven by energy stored in a tension spring and released by a lever. It is mechanically awkward — disc inertia is far higher than a hand's — which is why the affordable end of the segment runs almost entirely on one Seagull calibre while a Lange Zeitwerk costs six figures. Retrograde
A retrograde hand travels along an arc rather than a circle and flies back to the start when it reaches the end — we do not currently sell one.
Power complications
Here is a distinction almost nobody draws. Power reserve is how long the watch runs unworn: a number on a spec sheet. A power reserve indicator is a complication that displays how much of that reserve is left, on a dial arc or a subdial. A watch can have a superb reserve and no indicator, and a modest reserve with a beautiful one.

The rare tier, and what it costs here
Tourbillon
The escapement and balance sit in a rotating cage that turns the whole assembly through gravity's error, an idea patented by Breguet in 1801 for vertically-carried pocket watches. On a wrist it is broadly obsolete as an accuracy device and spectacular to watch. The cheapest genuine Swiss tourbillons start around $8,000. Sonnerie au passage
A passing strike: the watch chimes once, automatically, as it passes the hour. It is not a minute repeater, and the distinction matters — a repeater chimes on demand and encodes hours, quarters and minutes, which is a far harder mechanism. The Lucky Harvey ZLS402-1 at $1,499.99 is the accessible end of a complication whose nearest Swiss equivalents start several thousand dollars higher; the mechanism is explained in our sonnerie au passage guide.
Automaton
An animated figure on the dial, driven by the movement rather than by electricity. On the $1,199.99 Lion Dance the lion's tongue emerges on the hour and its eyes double as the display — left eye hours, right eye minutes. Jaquet Droz automatons start around $78,000 and the Chaykin x Andersen Genève Joker was €88,000 across 21 pieces, so the $1,199.99 to $2,399.99 band is genuinely unoccupied. Minute repeater
Pull a slide and the watch chimes the exact time on gongs: low notes for hours, double notes for quarters, high notes for the remaining minutes. We do not sell one, and neither does anyone else under about $3,000 — the mechanism needs hand-tuned gongs and hand-finished racks and snails that no volume process has yet replaced, which is why true repeaters live in high five and six figures.
Which watch complications are actually worth paying for?
Ranked by how often you will use them: the date, then a chronograph, then a GMT, then a power reserve indicator, then a moonphase, then everything in the rare tier. That last group is not a ranking failure — a tourbillon, a chiming watch and an automaton are display objects, bought to be looked at. Buy them knowing that.
The uncomfortable version: most chronograph owners have never timed anything, and most GMT owners check the second zone twice a year. That does not make either purchase wrong — it means you should buy the dial you want to look at, because the dial is the part you will actually use.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common watch complication?
The date. It appears on more mechanical and quartz watches than every other complication combined, it costs almost nothing to add, and it is the one owners interact with most. It is also the one most likely to cause a repair bill, because quick-setting it during the change-over hours can damage the date wheel.
What is a grand complication?
Traditionally a watch combining at least one complication from each of three families: a chiming function, a chronograph or rattrapante, and a full or perpetual calendar. Some houses add a tourbillon to the definition. We do not sell one and, at this price level, nobody does — the term belongs to five- and six-figure watchmaking.
Which watch complication is most useful day to day?
The date, by a wide margin. After that, a chronograph or a GMT depending on your life, with the honest caveat that most owners of both use neither. If you want a complication you will genuinely engage with every day, a power reserve indicator beats either, because you look at it every time you pick the watch up.
Do complications make a watch less reliable?
More parts mean more that can go out of adjustment, and more expensive service when it does. The practical question is not reliability but economics: independent watchmakers commonly quote roughly $150 to $350 for a mid-range mechanical service and $350 to $650 at entry-luxury level, with complicated pieces above that.
