The word gives the game away: tourbillon is French for whirlwind, and on a watch dial that is precisely what you get — a small cage of parts turning in a circle, all day, in full view. It is watchmaking’s most talked-about complication and its most misunderstood. Here is what one actually is, what it will not do for you, and what it costs in 2026.
What is a tourbillon?
A tourbillon is a rotating cage that carries a mechanical watch’s balance wheel, hairspring, pallet fork and escape wheel. The cage turns on its own axis, usually once a minute, averaging out the positional errors gravity introduces. Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the idea in 1801. Today it is valued as a display of watchmaking rather than as a route to accuracy.
What a tourbillon is not
It is not a power-reserve booster or a different way of reading the time — a tourbillon watch tells the time exactly like any other watch. It is also not the same thing as an exposed balance wheel. If a balance sits in a window and stays put while the wheel rocks back and forth, that is an open-heart dial: nothing travels, so it is not a tourbillon. And it is not automatic by default. Plenty of tourbillons, including every one Agelocer makes, are wound by hand.
How does a tourbillon work?
A tourbillon works by mounting the escapement inside a rotating cage. The mainspring drives the gear train, the train turns the cage once a minute, and the balance, hairspring, pallet fork and escape wheel ride round inside it, so every positional error is averaged instead of accumulated.
Four parts, one cage
Strip a mechanical watch back to the part that actually keeps time and four components are doing the work: the balance wheel, which swings back and forth; the hairspring, which governs how fast it swings; the pallet fork, which releases the gear train one step at a time; and the escape wheel, which does the stepping. That cluster is the escapement, and it is the part gravity interferes with. A tourbillon lifts all four out of the mainplate and mounts them inside a cage — commonly described as weighing under a gram and built from dozens of individually finished parts — which the movement then drives round.

One rotation per minute
It does not whirl round at speed. On the overwhelming majority of tourbillons the cage completes one full revolution every sixty seconds — slow enough to follow with your eye, quick enough that over an hour the escapement has spent equal time in every orientation. That is the entire mechanical argument: rather than correcting for gravity in one position, you visit all of them in turn and let the errors cancel. A few movements use faster or slower cages, but the minute is the convention.
The seconds-on-the-cage tell
On many tourbillons the seconds hand is mounted directly on the cage itself, so the pointer travels round with the mechanism instead of turning on the centre post. Why Breguet invented it in 1801
Breguet was solving a real problem, and it was not a wrist problem. A pocket watch spends its life in a waistcoat, hanging in one fixed vertical position. Whatever error the balance and hairspring pick up in that orientation — a hairspring sagging under its own weight, a balance a fraction out of poise — is baked in, in the same direction, every day for years. Put the escapement in a cage and turn it, and that error is averaged instead of accumulated. It worked, which is why for the next century the tourbillon lived in observatory competition watches and in pocket pieces built for people who cared about precision above all else.
Then the wristwatch arrived and quietly dismantled the justification. Your arm never stops moving, so an ordinary balance already samples every position through the day. Quill & Pad has written that modern balance design “made the tourbillon obsolete as a solution to improve precision”, and the watchmaker Roger Smith has said much the same in Hodinkee: today’s well-poised monometallic balances relegate the complication to the history books. What changed after the quartz crisis is what the tourbillon is for. It stopped being an accuracy device and became the clearest available proof that a watchmaker can build something difficult.
Flying, bridged, multi-axis: the types of tourbillon
Once you know what the cage is doing, the next question on any spec sheet is which kind of cage it is. Three arrangements cover almost everything on sale, plus one close relative that is not a tourbillon at all.
Bridged (the classic layout)
The original arrangement supports the cage from both sides: a bridge or cock above it and a pivot below, like an axle held in a frame. It is the most robust version and the most straightforward to build, and it is easy to spot — from the front, a metal arm crosses over the top of the rotating assembly.
Flying tourbillon
A flying tourbillon deletes the upper bridge entirely. The cage is cantilevered from underneath, so nothing crosses the view and the assembly appears to hover in its aperture. The trade-off is engineering difficulty: all the support and all the tolerance now come from one side. The design is credited to Alfred Helwig, who developed it with students at the German School of Watchmaking in Glashütte around 1920 — a widely repeated attribution in horological histories. Multi-axis tourbillons
If one rotating axis averages error in a plane, two or three average it in space. Double- and triple-axis tourbillons carry a cage inside a cage, each turning at its own rate, and they are hypnotic to watch. They also live at the very top of the market: Greubel Forsey, the reference name for multi-axis work, sells tourbillons from roughly $180,000 to well beyond $800,000. There is no budget tier here, and given what the assembly demands there probably never will be.
And the karrusel, briefly
A karrusel — Bahne Bonniksen’s 1892 alternative — also carries the escapement on a rotating platform, but it is driven differently through the going train and turns far more slowly, which makes it a cousin of the tourbillon rather than a copy of it.
What does “free-sprung” mean?
Two words travel together on almost every budget tourbillon spec sheet — “flying” and “free-sprung” — and they describe different things. Flying is how the cage is held. Free-sprung is how the watch is regulated.
A conventional movement has a regulator index: a small lever that slides along the hairspring to shorten or lengthen its working portion, speeding the watch up or slowing it down. It is fast to adjust, and it is also the weak link. Knock the index or let the hairspring wander beneath it and the rate moves with it. A free-sprung balance has no index at all. The hairspring is fixed at one working length, and rate is set instead by adjusting tiny weights or screws on the balance rim — slower, more skilled work, but a rate that tends to hold better once it is right. This is the arrangement high-end Swiss houses reach for, and it is what Agelocer specifies for the hand-wound Cal. 9001 in its $699 flying tourbillon. Worth being precise about the status of that claim: it is the brand’s own specification, not an independently verified measurement, and no lab has published test data on any Agelocer movement.

Why are tourbillons so expensive?
Tourbillons are expensive because the cage is assembled and adjusted by hand, because the part count and tolerances leave almost no margin for error, and because for two centuries the complication has been priced as proof of a maker’s ability rather than as a component. Volume matters too: most houses build them in the hundreds, not the thousands.
Hand assembly you cannot automate away
Industry write-ups put a traditional tourbillon cage at roughly 40 to 70-plus individually finished components with a combined mass under one gram, and estimate 200 to 400 hours of hand assembly and adjustment per example — Gear Patrol has published figures in that range. Every one of those hours belongs to a skilled watchmaker, and a cage that comes out a fraction out of poise has to be redone rather than shimmed.
Output nobody scales
A large Swiss maison might make a few hundred tourbillons in a year; an independent might make a dozen. Tooling, development and after-sales all have to be recovered across that number. Historically the price has had far more to do with how few exist than with how much material went into one.
And then there is positioning
Once quartz took accuracy off the table as a selling point, mechanical watchmaking started selling craft instead, and the tourbillon became the flagship — the thing at the top of the catalogue that proved the house could. Priced as a halo product, it stayed at a halo price. That logic is commercial rather than technical, which is exactly why it turned out to be the easiest part to undercut.
Then China industrialised it
Older buying guides and forum threads still repeat that a real tourbillon starts at $2,000 to $3,000. That is out of date. Chinese movement manufacturers — Tianjin Sea-Gull most prominently, whose ST80-series calibres put genuine tourbillons into mid-hundreds-of-dollars watches — moved the mechanism onto high-precision CNC machining at scale, and the economics changed: machined parts wherever machining is good enough, far lower labour costs, and volume that spreads development over tens of thousands of units. Sea-Gull is reported to build tens of thousands of tourbillon movements a year against a few hundred for a typical Swiss house — treat that as industry commentary rather than an audited figure. That is a spread of more than a thousand to one for a mechanism doing, functionally, the same job — and the accuracy argument has evaporated at every point on the ladder. The $699 watch and the $820,000 watch are both bought for the spectacle. What the money buys above $8,000 is hand-finishing you can see under a loupe, decades of provenance, a service network and resale value. What it does not buy is a better answer to gravity.

Should your first tourbillon be a $699 one?
Verdict: yes, if what you want is the mechanism. At $699 the steel-cased flying tourbillon gives you a real rotating cage in a slim 40mm case with a display caseback, and the open-worked skeleton version gives you the same hand-wound Cal. 9001 with more of the movement on show. Nothing at this price is pretending: the cage turns, the escapement rides inside it, and the calibre is named.

Is a tourbillon more accurate than a normal watch?
No — not on a wrist. Ordinary arm movement already averages the positional error the cage was designed to cancel, so a good non-tourbillon movement can comfortably out-perform a tourbillon.
