How does an automatic watch work?
An automatic watch works by turning wrist motion into stored spring energy. A weighted rotor swings as you move and winds the mainspring; that energy then leaks back out through a train of gears to the escapement, where a balance wheel oscillating at a fixed rate releases it in tiny, equal increments. Those increments are what move the hands.
An automatic is simply a mechanical watch with a rotor added — the same spring-and-escapement machine as a hand-wound one, plus a device that keeps it wound while you wear it. Which is why the older name, self-winding, describes it better than the modern one: nothing about it is automated, it is just wound by you without your noticing.
Everything after that is detail. There are only three ideas in the machine: a spring that stores energy, a brake that refuses to let it out all at once, and a counter that decides how often the brake opens. Understand those three and you have understood every mechanical watch ever built, the $249 one on this page and the six-figure one in the auction catalogue alike. The difference between them is finishing, tolerances and provenance — not physics.

The energy path, part by part
The rotor: your wrist is the power station
A rotor is a deliberately lopsided weight pivoted at the centre of the movement. Gravity keeps the heavy edge pointing down, so as your arm turns, the movement rotates around a weight that stays put — and that relative motion is what gets geared into winding. Agelocer’s spec sheet for the Space Station’s Cal. A3350 is the one page in this catalogue that spells the direction out: two-way automatic winding, so the rotor does useful work whichever way it swings. Whether that is done with reverser wheels or a pawl system, the brand does not say.

The mainspring and its barrel: the fuel tank
The mainspring is a long ribbon of hardened alloy coiled inside a toothed drum called the barrel. Winding tightens the coil. As it relaxes, it turns the barrel, and the barrel drives everything else. Nothing about the watch is clever here; it is simply the only part that holds energy, which is why the size and number of barrels sets how long the watch runs.
The gear train: one slow turn becomes hours of hands
Between barrel and escapement sits a short series of wheels that trades torque for speed. The barrel turns a handful of times a day; the escape wheel at the far end spins many times a minute. Along the way the same train carries the hands, and its pivots run in synthetic ruby bearings — the “jewels” brands count on caseback engravings. Twenty-seven of them, in the Baikal’s case.
The escapement: a brake that lets go eight times a second
Left alone, that gear train would unwind itself in seconds in a blur. The escapement stops it. A pallet fork rocks between the teeth of the escape wheel, locking the train, releasing exactly one tooth, then locking again — and each release also gives the balance a push to keep it going. That lock-release-lock is the ticking you hear, and it is the part that eventually wants fresh oil.
The balance wheel and hairspring: the counter
The balance is a small wheel on a coiled hairspring: wind it a little and it swings back, overshoots, swings again. Its rate is set by its own inertia and the stiffness of that spring, and it is what decides how often the brake opens. At 28,800 vibrations per hour — the figure Agelocer publishes across these calibres — that is eight beats a second, so the seconds hand advances in eighth-of-a-second steps. Close enough, to the naked eye, to look like a sweep. A Seiko NH35, the default automatic at the affordable end, runs slower at 21,600 vibrations per hour — six beats a second — which is the kind of difference laid out in our NH35 spec breakdown.

The slipping clutch: why you cannot overwind an automatic
Your wrist has no idea when the spring is full, so automatics attach the outer end of the mainspring to a sprung bridle that simply slips against the barrel wall once it is. Keep moving and the spring keeps slipping, harmlessly. This is also why the crown on an automatic that hand-winds never arrives at a hard stop the way a manual-wind watch does — you feel resistance build and then nothing more. That is normal, not a broken watch.
Why does an automatic watch stop when you take it off?
Because the only thing charging it is you. Off the wrist, nothing rewinds the mainspring, so it keeps unwinding until it runs out and the balance stops swinging. How long that takes is the power reserve. Nothing is damaged; the watch just needs winding and resetting. Hand-wound watches — most tourbillons at this price among them — stop for the same reason but have no rotor to help, so they need winding by hand every day or two.
The practical difference between figures is bigger than it looks. A stated 40 hours means a watch taken off on Friday evening has stopped by Sunday lunchtime. A stated 80 means Monday morning is still ticking, still on the right date. Within this catalogue that split is real and documented: the A4610 in the Baikal is quoted at 80 hours, while the Space Station’s A3350 is quoted at 40. The long figure is engineered by feeding one gear train from two mainspring barrels instead of one, not by making the watch better. Reserve is a convenience spec, and every one of these numbers is a manufacturer figure.

What “accurate” means once you own one
Agelocer publishes a tolerance of about ±15 seconds a day for these calibres. Treat that as a brand-stated figure: nobody has published an independent measurement of an Agelocer, and the brand has almost no enthusiast-forum footprint to draw owner data from. What we can say with confidence is what governs the number on any mechanical watch, because the physics is not brand-specific.
Rate moves with position — gravity loads the balance differently dial-up on a desk than crown-down in a drawer, which is why a watch can gain on weekdays and lose overnight. It moves with how much wind is left, since torque falls away at the end of the reserve. It moves with temperature, mildly. And it moves a lot with magnetism: a laptop speaker, a magnetic laptop case or a handbag clasp can pull hairspring coils together and send a watch minutes fast a day. That is a demagnetising job, not a repair.
To measure your own, note the difference against your phone at the same hour on five consecutive days, wearing the watch normally, then divide by five. One number on one morning tells you nothing. A few seconds fast per day, consistently, is a good result at any price — and easier to live with than slow, because a watch that gains is never late.

Reading about a rotor is not the same as seeing one move, and a display caseback costs the buyer nothing extra at this end of the market. Four in this range make the mechanics visible, with the specs exactly as the brand states them:

The brand calls the dial a “three-pin separate design”: hours and small seconds sit in their own sub-dials rather than sharing a centre. Verdict: buy it for the layout, knowing the reserve is half the Baikal’s.
- Schwarzwald Double-Sided Skeleton, $269 — 40mm and only 9.5mm thick, Cal. A4710, sapphire at the front and a 30mm panoramic window at the back, on leather or a steel bracelet. Open-worked from both sides, so there is no angle where the movement is hidden.
- Codex Double Skeleton, $239 — the square one, open-worked front and back. Worth knowing before you order: its product page names neither the calibre nor a reserve figure, where the Baikal’s does both. Buy this one for the view, not the spec sheet. Verdict: the most mechanism per dollar here, with the least documentation.

Which of the three you should actually buy is a separate argument with a separate answer, and it has its own home: automatic or quartz, decided properly. This post is about the machine, not the shopping list.
Living with an automatic
- Restarting a stopped watch. Most automatics also hand-wind. If yours does, give the crown twenty to thirty turns before setting the time — a watch started by shaking begins its life on almost no reserve.
- Setting the date. Avoid using the quickset roughly between 9pm and 3am, when the calendar wheels are already engaged for the nightly change. Advance the hands past the change instead.
- Watch winders are optional. They are a convenience for anyone who hates resetting a calendar, not maintenance. Leaving a watch stopped in a drawer harms nothing.
- Water resistance. The 50m (5 ATM) rating these carry means rain, handwashing and splashes — not swimming, and never a hot shower, where seals expand and steam gets in.
- Servicing. Mechanical watches want fresh lubricant eventually; makers typically suggest every five to seven years, sooner if the rate wanders badly. - A stuttering seconds hand is usually not a fault. If your automatic runs a Miyota 8215 — extremely common at this price, including across Specht & Söhne — the seconds hand will visibly quiver or stutter between beats. That is the calibre’s indirect seconds drive, a design trait with no effect on timekeeping. The same movement is worth knowing about for a second reason: older 8215s cannot be stopped for precise setting, newer production can, and both are still in circulation.
Worn daily, an automatic never needs winding at all — the rotor does it. The ritual only reappears after a weekend in a drawer.
Your first automatic: three that teach you something

Two honest caveats before you spend. First, the strap: across independent write-ups, the stock straps and bracelets are the most consistent criticism of this brand, so budget $30–$60 for a replacement and the watch punches well above its price. Questions people actually ask
Do automatic watches need winding if you wear them every day?
No. Normal daily wear keeps the rotor swinging and the mainspring topped up, and the slipping clutch stops the spring being overwound. Winding only matters after the watch has stopped, or before a desk-bound day with very little arm movement — a few turns then does no harm at all.
How long does an automatic watch last?
Two different answers. Off the wrist it runs for its power reserve: 40 to 80 stated hours across the models above. As an object, a serviced mechanical movement can run for decades — the wearing parts are jewelled and replaceable, which is exactly why servicing every five to seven years matters more than the original price. Is it bad to let an automatic watch stop?
No. A stopped watch is simply an unwound one; nothing seizes, nothing wears. The only argument against long storage is that old lubricant thickens whether the watch runs or not, so a movement left untouched for years is due a service before you trust it. Wind, set, wear.
How accurate should my automatic watch be?
Judge it in seconds per day, not per month. Agelocer states about ±15 seconds a day for these calibres, while Swiss chronometer certification allows −4 to +6 — a different tier of watch entirely. Measure yours over five days against your phone before worrying: consistency matters more than the number, and a steady gain is easy to live with.
