A hand-wound tourbillon does not fail quietly. It stops — usually overnight, usually on the nightstand — and the first thought most new owners have is that something expensive has broken. Nothing has. The mainspring ran out, because this is the one job the watch hands back to you.
The short answer: take the watch off, check the crown is pushed fully in, then turn it clockwise in smooth half-turns until you feel firm resistance — and stop there. Almost every tourbillon at this price is hand-wound, with no rotor, so it wants winding daily or every other day.
Everything you need for how to wind a tourbillon watch safely is below, but one piece of honesty first: Agelocer publishes no winding procedure and no turn count for any of its tourbillons — the word "crown" appears nowhere in the brand's specification sheets. Is your tourbillon hand-wound or automatic?
Look through the caseback. If a half-moon weight sweeps across the movement as you tilt the watch, it is automatic and your wrist does the work. If the movement sits perfectly still, it is hand-wound and nothing happens until you turn the crown. Every Agelocer tourbillon is hand-wound.
The spec line is the other tell: manual winding or hand-wound rather than automatic machinery. Agelocer's tourbillons use two brand-stated calibres — Cal. 9001 at 28,800 vph with an 80-hour reserve, and Cal. 9301 in the 3D-Manta at 60 hours. Neither has a rotor.

How to wind a tourbillon watch, step by step
Six steps, and the fourth is the only one that really matters.
1. Take it off your wrist first
Winding a watch strapped to your arm forces the crown sideways, and side-loading is what bends winding stems. Hold the case in one hand, wind with the other. Four seconds, and it removes the most common way owners damage a manual watch.
2. Make sure the crown is fully home
Winding only works with the crown pressed flat against the case. Some watches, mostly divers, use a screw-down crown that unscrews first; Agelocer's published specifications for these tourbillons do not list one, and if the crown turns freely you do not have one. If the crown is out at a setting position, you will move the hands instead.
3. Turn it clockwise, in half-turns
Roll the crown away from you between thumb and index finger — clockwise as you look down at the dial — in relaxed half-turns rather than a continuous spin. You will feel the ratchet click on the return. Anticlockwise turns just slip, so there is nothing to gain from cranking both ways.

4. Stop at firm resistance
This is the whole technique. Each turn gets stiffer as the mainspring fills, then the feel changes from springy to solid. That wall is the end of the wind. Stop the moment you meet it — not two turns later, not "just to be sure".
5. How many turns is that?
Twenty to forty turns from empty is the range usually quoted for hand-wound watches in general, and it works as a sanity check rather than an instruction: five turns to the wall means something is wrong, sixty and still going means the crown is not properly engaged. Agelocer publishes no per-model figure, so counting never replaces feel — and the manual in the box outranks any number online, this one included.
6. Wind at the same time each day
Most owners wind before putting the watch on in the morning. The movement then spends its life in the high-torque part of the reserve, where the rate is steadiest, and you never have to remember whether you did it.
Can you overwind a tourbillon?
In practical terms, no. A modern mainspring barrel reaches a designed hard stop, and once you feel it the wind is over. Damage comes from forcing the crown onward past that stop — that is how stems shear and ratchet teeth chip.
The old overwinding warnings come from early and vintage movements, where a full barrel and a heavy hand really could break something. On a current hand-wound calibre the honest version is: you cannot overwind it, but you can certainly overpower it.
How do you set the time on a tourbillon?
Wind first, then pull the crown out to its setting position, move the hands clockwise to the time you want, and push the crown fully back in. Most of these are time-only, so one pull is all there is. On anything with a date, stay out of the late-night window below.
Move the hands clockwise as your default
Clockwise is safe on essentially every movement. Running hands backwards past midnight is where calendar mechanisms get chewed, so if you overshoot, keep going forward around the dial instead of reversing.
Stay out of the date danger window
Between roughly 9pm and 3am the date-change gears on a calendar watch are engaged and under load, and forcing a quick-set through that window can break teeth. Move the hands to a safe hour first. The same caution applies to a moon disc — our moonphase explainer covers that mechanism.
Push the crown home and check the cage
Press the crown flat against the case to reseal it and restart a hacked movement, then look at the tourbillon. The cage should be turning. On these watches the cage is the running indicator, so if it is still, you are either out of power or the crown is not seated.
Do you have to wind it every single day?
Strictly, no. Agelocer states 80 hours for Cal. 9001 — a Friday-evening wind is still running on Monday morning — and 60 hours for the twin-barrel Cal. 9301. In practice, wind daily anyway, because a mainspring gives its most consistent torque early in the reserve.
Long reserves are engineered by pairing barrels, and the trade-off is real: amplitude and rate drift as the spring unwinds, so the last stretch of an 80-hour reserve is not the watch at its best. Living with a hand-wound tourbillon
A watch winder will not help
The most common misconception we get asked about. A winder rotates a watch to spin an automatic rotor; a hand-wound movement has no rotor, so the box turns all night and the watch is still flat in the morning. Spend the money on a strap instead.
If it stops, nothing is wrong
A stopped hand-wound watch is an empty one, not a broken one. Wind it, reset the time, carry on. There is no harm in letting it run down and no benefit in keeping it running when you are not wearing it.
Keep it dry

Winding a tourbillon: your questions answered
Do tourbillon watches wind themselves?
Most do not. The great majority of tourbillons under a few thousand dollars, including every one we sell, are hand-wound with no rotor inside. Automatic tourbillons exist but are the exception at this level. Check the caseback: no sweeping weight means no self-winding.
How often should I wind a manual watch?
Once a day, at the same time, even when the reserve is long. Daily winding keeps the mainspring in its most consistent torque band, which is where the rate is steadiest, and it turns the whole thing into a habit rather than a decision.
Can I overwind it by accident?
No. Modern barrels reach a defined stop and refuse to take more. The damage scenario is forcing the crown past that stop, or winding on the wrist so the stem is loaded sideways. Wind gently, off the wrist, and stop at resistance.
What if my tourbillon has stopped completely?
Wind it — twenty or thirty turns will get it going — then set the time and finish winding to full. No harm has been done by letting it run down. If it will not start with power in the barrel, that is a warranty conversation rather than a winding problem.
