What is a moonphase watch?
A moonphase watch tracks the roughly 29.5-day lunar cycle on the dial. Behind a shaped aperture sits a disc carrying two identical moons; it advances a little each day, so the moon on show appears to wax and wane. For most owners that is pure decoration. For anglers, sailors, gardeners and night photographers, it is a working tool.
The shaped aperture is the part people ask about. It is normally drawn as two overlapping arcs — the “bosom” or kidney shape — because that curve is what makes a flat printed circle read as a three-dimensional crescent. The moon on the disc is always a full circle. The aperture does the acting, masking more or less of it as the disc turns beneath.
What follows is the mechanism, the setting procedure, and the part this category tends not to publish: how accurate these displays really are, including the ones in our own cabinet.

How does a moonphase watch work?
A gear-driven finger on the calendar side of the movement nudges the moon disc forward by one tooth every 24 hours. A conventional disc rides on a 59-tooth wheel, so a full rotation takes 59 days — and because the disc carries two moons rather than one, each moon completes its own cycle in 29.5 days.
Why the disc carries two moons
Because a single moon cannot give you the half day. The lunar month is 29.5 days and you cannot advance a wheel by half a tooth, so a one-moon disc would have to settle for 29 or 30 and drift visibly within months. Fifty-nine teeth and two moons solves it arithmetically: 59 daily steps per rotation, 29.5 days per moon. At any moment one moon is on show and its twin is hidden behind the dial, waiting its turn.
What actually moves it
The moon disc hangs off the same train that flips the date, which is why the two behave alike. Somewhere around midnight the finger engages and pushes, and on most calibres that engagement is a slow drag over several hours rather than a snap. Hence the golden rule below: while the teeth are meshed, forcing the display by hand loads exactly the parts you cannot afford to bend. It is also why a moonphase is among the cheapest complications to add — a disc and a finger on an existing calendar — and how it reaches $269 rather than $2,690.
Bosom aperture, radial pointer, rotating globe
Three families cover almost everything on sale. The bosom aperture is the classic: a window at 12 or 6 with the twin-moon disc behind it. Radial or pointer versions run a hand around a printed phase scale, showing the cycle as an arc rather than a picture. Rotating-globe designs mount a half-lacquered sphere turning on its own axis — the most literal, and the most expensive to build. Agelocer's Astronomer is a fourth variation worth describing accurately: rather than a small kidney window, an oversized engraved moon travels a wide arc across most of the dial, with “MOON PHASE” and a graduated scale printed at the bottom. The brand calls it a panoramic moon phase.

How accurate is a moonphase watch, really?
Less accurate than the marketing implies, and it rarely matters. A standard 59-tooth moonphase runs about 45 minutes fast per lunar month, which accumulates to one full day roughly every two and a half to three years. Reset it once a year, or whenever you set the date after a stop, and the display stays visually correct.
The 59-tooth standard: a day out every two-and-a-half years
The real synodic month — new moon to new moon — is about 29.5306 days. The 59-tooth mechanism gives you exactly 29.5. The 0.03-day gap is invisible on any single night; it takes something like 32 months to build into a whole day of visible error, and even then the moon is a fat gibbous instead of a full. Most owners correct it by accident, because the watch stopped over a long weekend and everything got reset anyway.
The high-precision tier, and why it never comes cheap
The famous long-interval moonphases use far larger and compounded gear counts — 135 teeth and upwards — to close that 0.03-day gap, quoting the interval between one-day corrections in decades or centuries rather than years. That work belongs to Jaeger-LeCoultre, A. Lange & Söhne, Patek Philippe and Rolex, at four, five and six figures. Nothing in our cabinet is in that tier, and we are not going to imply otherwise. If a sub-$1,000 watch claims astronomical-grade moon accuracy, treat the claim as marketing until somebody has put the watch on a bench and counted the days.
What happened when somebody measured ours
Which is exactly what happened to Agelocer. The product titles say “29.5-Day Moonphase”; that is the brand's stated figure, and we quote it as one. Independently, Deployant reviewed an Agelocer Silver Moon hands-on and reported the moon disc advancing on a 31-day cycle rather than the true 29.53-day month, concluding that they had to disqualify it as a horological moonphase. Wristwatchreview, covering the same family, describes the display as running from a modified date wheel — consistent with a 31-day advance, because a date wheel has 31 positions.
Two caveats, in both directions. Nobody has published a measured cycle for the specific Astronomer variant you would buy, so this is the best available evidence rather than a bench test of your watch. And Deployant, in that same review, rated the finishing — polished anglage, Côtes de Genève, blued screws — as arguably better than others in the price category. Both things can be true. Buy an Astronomer for the size and sculpting of that moon, for a real stone or meteorite dial and a brand-stated 80-hour reserve. Do not buy it as an astronomical instrument, and expect to reset the moon more often than the 59-tooth arithmetic above implies. How do you set a moonphase watch?
Set the moon before you set the date and time, and never touch either between roughly 9 pm and 3 am, when the calendar gears are engaged. Look up tonight's phase, advance the moon until the display matches, then set the date, then the time. If you overshoot, keep going — a full cycle takes you back.
- Look up the actual phase for tonight and your location, from a lunar calendar, almanac or weather app. Set the watch to reality, not to the last picture you remember.
- Stay out of the danger window. Move the hands to a safe time first — six o'clock is traditional — and adjust nothing between roughly 9 pm and 3 am. Forcing a display while the driving finger is meshed is the commonest way to break a calendar.
- Moon first, then date, then time. On many movements you advance the moon by cycling the date, so the wrong order means doing the job twice.
- If you have lost the cycle, run the moon round to full — the one phase you can identify with certainty — then count forward to today.
- Defer to the booklet in the box. Some watches give you a dedicated moon pusher, some a second crown position, some nothing but repeated date advances.

A short history in three objects
The idea is far older than the wristwatch. The Antikythera mechanism, a geared Greek device generally dated to the second or first century BC, already carried a lunar indication — the oldest surviving attempt to put the moon on a machine. The Prague astronomical clock of 1410 moved that onto a public facade, a half-silvered sphere turning to show the phase to anyone in the square. The mid-century triple-calendar wristwatch then shrank it to 35 millimetres, fixed the aperture at 12 o'clock and made the moonphase a dress-watch signature rather than an observatory function.
Quartz almost finished it off — charm has no answer to a battery movement that keeps better time for less money. The mechanical revival brought it back, and the last decade added something new: an automatic mechanical moonphase under $300, which is where most people reading this will actually meet the complication. What does a moonphase watch cost?
Anywhere from about $200 to about $200,000, and the money mostly buys dial material and mechanical ambition rather than a better moon. Mechanical moonphases start in the mid-$200s, cluster heavily between $300 and $1,500, and run to six figures at the astronomical end. Who is a moonphase watch actually for?
Three buyers, in our experience: someone who wants one genuinely beautiful object, someone learning how a mechanical watch behaves, and a small group who use the display for real. Here is the pick for each, followed by everything you are trading away in all three cases.
The person who wants one beautiful thing. If the appeal is a large moon crossing a night-sky dial, the aventurine-dial Astronomer at $499 is the one to look at — natural stone, and a dial that shifts as the light moves. Nobody will guess the price.

The person buying a first mechanical watch. Start on leather at $269, where you get the same movement and the same moon as every model above it. A moonphase is an unusually good teaching complication: you have to know where the moon is, and you have to respect a change window, so you learn how a calendar movement behaves.
The person who uses it. Tide and light planning is real work for sea anglers, sailors and landscape photographers. Just be honest about which display you are buying — a picture of a moon that needs a nudge each year is a reference, not an ephemeris, and the caveats above apply.
The counterweights apply to everything in the table. The stock strap and bracelet are the weakest part of the package — three independent reviews single them out — so budget $30 to $60 for a 20 mm replacement and the watch punches noticeably harder. Accuracy figures are the brand's: ±15 seconds a day at 28,800 vph, with no independent measurement published either way.
